How to Safely Clean Window Tint Film

Whether it's smudges from the kid's finders or the dog's nose on the patio door, windows in our home and car can be a challenge to keep clean. If you have "tinted windows" there are some precautions you wish to take.

Most window films are manufactured with a protective coating to prevent scratches in the film. When cared for properly, this coating will last the lifetime of the film. However, constant use of harsh chemicals, like ammonia, could have a negative effect on this coating over time. Here are some simple suggestions that will make your new window tinting film looking great for years to come.

  • Avoid ammonia based cleaners
  • Do not use scrub pads
  • Clean when glass is cool
A mild soap and water solution will work well. Use only about a tea spoon of dish soap in a 32 oz. spray bottle filled with water. Cleaning may be done with a squeegee or micro fiber cloths. Micro fibers will not streak like paper towels. If you prefer a commercial glass cleaner, I like Sprayway. This ammonia free cleaner works awesome on window tint and mirrors. Sprayway is available in most grocery stores as well as the big box stores.

Should you have your windows professionally cleaned, be sure to inform them that you have window film on your windows. They will know what to do. Hopefully..........

Day Dream 15 Residential Window Tinting Film

A Highlands Ranch homeowner had a serious issue with heat and glare in their family room. With large east facing windows they found it hard to ever enjoy the room.  www.tintcolorado.com

In this photo the top windows and left two center windows have Day Dream 15 installed. The center, right window is untreated. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy day so it is difficult to see what a difference the film made. However, this window film will reduce the heat entering the windows by almost 70%.

Lower Downtown Office Gets New Look With Tinting

CODE, a talent agency for high-tech jobs, had an issue with too much light entering the main area of the office making it difficult to see the overhead projector. Clear View installed our "Illusion" our darkest window film on the top 9 windows to reduce the light. The bottom 9 windows were treated with our "white frost" film. On the center row we installed the company's logo.

The A/C Just Won't Keep Up

The High Pointe Center in Parker is a beautiful building. Some of the tenants include Brown Compounding, Heidi's Deli and Parker Family Care. The building was built with a great looking blue glass. Facing east and west the building takes in a lot of solar heat gain because this type of glass is designed to perform best in colder months by keeping buildings warmer in winter. Unfortunately, the building was also built with an undersized HVAC. During the summer months, the offices are uncomfortably hot, even with the a/c turned up.

Clear View installed our ASWF Reflection 35 window film. This is a light silver reflective film that offers high visibility coupled with outstanding heat reduction.

No film on left   /   Reflection 35 on Right

Because of the scope and size of the building several days were required to complete the project. On the second day of installation one of the tenants noted how much cooler the office was. He mentioned that usually by mid-afternoon it's "just plain 'ol hot in here!" The building manager remarked that the spike in energy consumption had significantly decreased.

Wow! It's so much cooler in here!

We received a call from a Castle Rock homeowner that couldn't keep their home cool on hot days. Their a/c bill was through the roof, but the house was still hot. Several years ago she had some windows without window treatments treated with window film. The film worked, but the house was still hot. The problem was that even though she had wood blinds, the heat was already in the house and the a/c simply distributed the heat.

She selected Clear View to install our Day Dream 35 window film. Day Dream 35 is a unique window film product designed to reduce heat, cut glare and block UV without a dark look and a low interior reflection. Making your view clear, even at night. Another attractive feature is that it performs just as well as the high priced "Ceramic" films without the high price.

As soon as I arrived to install the film the homeowner (Carin) asked if it mattered where I started. "No, doesn't matter" I said. "Could you please do my office first? It's so hot in here." So, that's where I started. Before I was even done she commented that she could feel the difference. Later, she remarked that finally, she could stand to be in there. "It feels 15 degrees cooler in here". Well, I can't say for sure it was 15 degrees cooler, but you could definately feel the difference.

She was very happy with the way the film looked and even more pleased by the performance.

Sky Light Problem Solved

This Genesee homeowner had 3 large sky lights in their kitchen that made the room extremely hot in the summer. The previous homeowner had installed some white woven shades to help block the heat and light. But, the view was blocked and the shades were covered in dust.

The homeowner selected SKY 10 window film to replace the shades. Once the shades were removed, it was easy to see why they wanted them down. Take a look at the difference! SKY 10 cut the glare and blocked the heat by 75%! UV was reduced by 99% and the room was much more comfortable. In this photo, the 2 sky lights on the right are treated with Clear View window film and the window on the left is unprotected. Look at the difference. Wow! The homeowner was excited that she could see the trees and sky since her view wasn't blocked by the shades anymore.

Boulder Home Cuts the Heat

This Boulder homeowner had a serious issue with solar heat gain in their west facing windows. With 3 month old twins, they wanted their home to be as comfortable as possible. They had installed some "do-it-yourself" window film on their upper windows, but it simply wasn't geting the job done and....didn't look so good.
In this photo, the right window has been treated with Day Dream 25. As you can see, they still have a crystal clear view of the Flat Irons. The heat was reduced by 55% and the bright glare was minimized.

Is one brand of window film better than another?

There are a lot of window film brands on the market. Some are good and some are..... not so good. How can you tell the difference when everybody in the window film business sells "the best" window film products? Just ask them. While many are proud of the brand they carry chances are they carry that brand for a reason. Whether it is price, installation ease or brand name recognition. But, in the end it all comes down to this.

Over the past 10 years there have been a lot of foreign window film brands introduced in the U.S. Some with "Americanized" names. While I am not suggesting that these products are inferior, I am suggesting that if you should ever have a warranty concern.... GOOD LUCK!

I have personally worked with a number  of window film brands in my years in the business. What I have found is that most American manufacturers are quick to respond to warranty concerns. Most, if not all even cover the glass that the film is installed on. This is not true with some of the foreign brands. Be sure to read the warranty carefully before buying. Just because it has a catchy name, doesn't necessarily make it the best choice.

There are a lot of good products made in the USA. Most are fairly equal in quality. Nobody really has  better product than the next. Even the products from a major manufacturer like 3M and the guys that claim their film "chemically bonds" to the glass. (This stuff is a PAIN to get off the glass when it fails)

My view is as long as you stick with a product made in the USA you are more often than not going to be pleased with the film and the warranty. But, if it comes from Korea or India.... be careful.

Our American Standard Window Films and Sun Gard films are made right here in the USA for your peace of mind.

Ceramic Window Films... What's the Difference?

So, is there pottery in the window film? Not hardly.

In the late 1990's the term "ceramic" was just becoming associated with window film. The term came from the fact that some metals, when applied to film and exposed to oxygen would oxidize and become a form of ceramic. This is not the same ceramic as in insulators or the tiles on the Space Shuttle. Certainly not the same as a ceramic flower pot.

The design idea was to create a window film that offered the performance of traditional reflective films without the shiny, reflective appearance. The product was a success! Unfortunately, it was more expensive and was not available in the darker, glare reducing shades.

Over time, manufacturers have modified the traditional films to resemble the ceramic films. For example, our Optivision 35 and Day Dream 35 look almost identical to it's ceramic counter part. The performance was not compromised, but the cost was substantially less.

Spectral Selective films are a little difference. These films offer the performance of a 35% light transmission film and are almost invisible on the window. This is great for homeowners that do not want to alter the look of their windows. Our Firewall window film is one of these products.  But, as with all high tech products, it does cost more. We also offer Sun Gard Nova 70. This very light film will  not darken the room and still reduce heat by better than 50%. Nova is slightly less expensive than the ceramic films.

At Clear View my goal is to provide a quality product at a fair value. That's why in many cases I suggest homeowners look past the high tech  products and the fancy sales pitch for the better value for the money.

3M Fasara Venetian Adds a New Look

Recently Clear View Window Tinting www.tintcolorado.com installed 3M Fasara Venetian decorative window film at the Urban Drainage District office in Denver. The idea was to create increased level of privacy into work spaces and conference room. The film is a "gradient". This means the lines are wider at the bottom and narrower at the top. This creates privacy at the lower portion of the windows and almost clear at the top.

There are literally hundreds of options in decorative window films. Visit our decorative film website www.denverdecorativefilm.com

Conference Rooms Need Privacy

Frosted glass window film for privacy

To prevent distractions durning meetings, this Centennial law office chose to add a simple two foot  (24") wide stripe of white frost window film to there conference room windows. The film obscured the view just enough to prevent clients from feeling as though they were being watched as this room is situated immediately inside the entrance. With the top and the bottom of the glass untreated the rom still has a very open feel to it.

Clear View also added a 30" frosted stripe to each of the office windows that faced into the hallway.

Castle Rock Homeowner Selects Day Dream 25

This Castle Rock home originally had it's windows tinted back in 1999. The new owners had no idea what type of window film had been installed. What they did know was it looked horrible. The film was bubbling and had severe distorion. To make things worst, the painters had applied masking tape to the edges of the windows directly on top of the film. Sadly, when the tape was removed, the film was damaged.

Because the home had large windows in the family room, they knew that if they only removed the old film the house would be almost impossible to cool on hot summer days. Also, their furnishings would be subjected to damaging UV rays.

After visiting with Clear View they selected Day Dream 25. This amazing window film will reduce solar heat by almost 60% while blocking UV by 99% and cut the bright glare just the right amount. And, their new window tinting is now backed by a Lifetime Warranty!

Almost immediately they noticed a difference. The family room was instantly cooler and the windows no longer were an eye sore.

Just look at the difference Day Dream 25 made in their view!

Does window film cause seal failure in insulated windows?

Countless times I  have heard consumers comment that the "glass guy" told them that window film causes seal failure in windows. Seal failure occurs when the sealant between the two panes of glass breaks, subjecting the airspace to the surrounding environment. Since the seal acts as the moisture barrier, if the seal breaks, condensation can develop in the airspace of the insulating glass window, making it look cloudy or filled with moisture droplets.

The environment inside an insulating glass unit can be affected by its external environment such as temperature and air pressure. Changes in temperature and air pressure put additional stress on the seals. The use of less resilient sealants in the construction of the insulating glass unit can also cause the seals to fail. Most manufacturers, however, design and test their products to withstand significant changes in air pressure and temperature, thereby reducing the chance of failures. Nevertheless, seal failure does and will continue to occur simply because of the way in which insulated units are manufactured, shipped and installed. In fact, the insulating glass manufacturers association (SIGMA) has found normal seal failure to be at a rate of 1.5% of the insulated units.

So, does window film cause seal failure? Not likely. The window film industry has conducted a number of tests to evaluate the affect of window film on sealed glass units. Results indicate that on a clear insulating unit, window film designed for residential and commercial application only increases the summertime airspace temperature by no more than 22 degrees, a pressure increase of only .55 psi (pounds per square inch). Put into perspective, most manufacturers of the glass units design their products to withstand a pressure change of 3.30 psi, over six times the film's potential pressure increase.

What can you do? We advise our customers who have seal failure concerns to contact their window manufacturer. If your window manufacturer voids the warranty on the window when film is installed, you should ask for their test data supporting these warranty limitations.
