Breckenridge designer selects Optivision 35 for her client's amazing view

 This custom home in Breckenridge wanted to protect the home's interior from the direct western sun. At the same time, they obviously wanted to maintain their amazing view.

We installed samples of our Optivision 35 and 45. Because the windows faced due west, they selected the 35% film.

They were quite amazed at how the film made the view even better! Take a look at these photos. The windows on top have been treated with Optivison 35 and the bottom windows have no film. You can easily see how the colors actually pop out with more clarity.

Optivision 35 blocks 99% of the damaging UV rays, reduces annoying glare by 60% and will cut solar heat by up to 56%.

Will window film really stop my furniture from fading?

I've been asked that very question countless times. The true answer is NO. The fact is, window film will certainly help protect your furnishings from the harsh effects of the sun, but will not stop it completely. Window film blocks up to 99% of the damaging UV rays, but UV is only 40% of the damage. Additional harm comes from the direct sunlight and solar heat. Window tinting will help in all 3 areas. The darker the film, the higher the protection level. But, the very light films will often reduce fading by 50% or more. However, so long as there is light some gradual fading may occur. This is true with all window film brands.

IR Films vs. Traditional Films

Every purchase of window film requires some form of compromise. If you want more light to penetrate your windows, you also will get more heat-gain. If you want Maximum protection against Solar Energy coming into your home or office, you will need a dark and highly reflective film to do the job. These are the facts but many customers are misinformed that they can have Maximum heat rejection and still let in 60-70% of the light. The reason is that the sales rep, in trying to sell his spectrally selective product, discusses IR rejection as if it is the only source of heat gain. In reality IR represents 53% of the total heat-gain coming through window glass. Visible light also brings 44% of the heat as well as all of the glare issues relative to sunny windows.

Spectrally Selective films are great products when you are trying to maintain high visible light levels in a room, or very low change in the appearance of the windows when viewing from the outside, or better visibility out of the window during low-light periods. By being able to also block out 80-90% of the IR radiation, these films provide a good reduction in solar heat gain as well, but they are NOT the best films at reducing solar heat gain. If you look at the TSER, total solar energy rejection, of spectrally selective products with a visible light transmission of at least 50%, you will find that the TSER will most likely be below 60%. Very often a light, traditional film will meet the needs at a much lower cost than the Spectrally Selective films. While these IR films are great technology, they may not be the right film for you. Always closely check the data. Equally important... read the warranty and compare.

In some cases the manufacturer's further skew the information by showing only the most advantageous numbers from their data. One such company bases their claims of efficiency on just one data point when the sun is at a 60 degree angle. NFRC requires all testing to be done at a 90 degree angle, which reduces the actual energy that can be blocked.

Will tinting make my rooms dark?

There are a variety of shades of home window tinting films from clear to room darkening. Obviously, the darker the tint, the less light that will enter the room. The lighter films will still block UV rays by up to 99%, however they often reduce less solar heat. For those that want to reduce solar heat, but do not want a tinted look we offer very light sun control films that will block up to 54% of the sun's heat without changing the look of the windows.

For rooms that are burdened with too much sun, the darker tinted shades may be the better choice. Privacy Window Film

We receive calls almost daily asking if we offer films that will allow one to see outside, but block the view from the outside. The short answer is Yes. However, there are few things to consider. Most films will create what we refer to as "daytime privacy". This means during the daylight hours when it is brighter outside than inside, the film will restrict visibility from the outside while allowing for a clear view from the inside.

Oops....it can happen.

This morning I received a call from a former customer. Seems she managed to get some fingernail polish on her tinted kitchen window. In trying to get it off, she used a coarse green scrub pad. Unfortuantely, this scratched her window tinting. She was quick to point out that she had cleaned her windows on a number of occasions without damage. I explained to her that scrub pads are often color coded by their texture. Green is one of the most abrasive.
It just so happened we were going to be in her area today, so I told her we would stop by and take care of her. When we stopped in we found that the damaged window was a small window over the kitchen sink. We were able to remove the damaged film and replace it in less than 30 minutes. She was thrilled!
When she asked how much she owed me, I told her... "Don't worry about it. Just refer me to your neighbors" I was told "we already have!" She insisted on paying anyway. We charged her half price and everybody was happy.

There are 2 morals to this story: Never use an green abrasive scrubber on window film and a little bit of customer service goes a long way! I can guarantee the next time she thinks of window tinting, she remembers Clear View.

Is it too cold to tint my windows?

We are often asked "is it too cold to install window film"? Unfortunately, this isn't a simple answer. Installing film on single pane glass when it is below freezing is certainly not recommended. Because the glass can get extremely cold, the water used to install the product can freeze, causing damage to the adhesive system. Dual pane glass is less risky of freezing, but caution should also be used on "snow days". Without the warmth of the sun, on cold days, once again the moisture could freeze. What Does the Warranty Cover?

Window film warranties can vary from one manufacturer to another. Most quality window films come with a limited lifetime warranty for homes and a 10 year warranty on commercial properties. This warranty should cover both material and labor 100% through the warranty period. Beware of anything less.

An important part of the warranty is the "glass coverage". In Colorado it is extremely important to understand what the warranty covers. Most major manufacturer's offer a 2 to 5 year warranty covering your windows against thermal shock fracture. This means if your window cracks as a result of the window film, the manufacturer in many cases will pay up to $500 for the replacement of that window. Unfortunately, not all window films offer this coverage. Be a wise consumer and ask or read the warranty carefully. Get to know who the manufacturer is and where the product is made. My experience is that forgein manufacturer's are very difficult to work with shoulod you have a warranty claim. Be smart...buy American made products.

Commercial window tinting: This Broomfield technology company had an issue with the building's hvac system keeping the floors containing room after room of computer servers cool. Even with the a/c at it's highest level the areas were still too warm. We discovered a great amount of solar heat was coming from the windows that faced east and west. Clear View recommended Sun Gard's Silver 35 window film. This film provided the needed reduction in solar heat gain without drastically changing the look of the building.
